Famous People Born in Africa

Africa can boast of being the birth place of several famous personalities. These personalities have excelled in various fields like sports, politics, and films among others.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 and was the first member in his family to attend school. He later on joined the University College of Fort Hare and was in to politics right from his student days. He also took part in the anti-apartheid movement. Because of this he was imprisoned on 12 July, 1964 and he continued to be in prison for 27 years. After his release in 1990, he went on to become the first president of African National Congress. He was also awarded the Nobel peace prize.

Omar Sharif was born on April 10, 1932 in Alexandria, Egypt as Michael Demitri Chalhoub. He graduated and earned a degree in mathematics from Cairo University. He also converted to Islam and changed his name to Omar Sharif. He started acting in Hollywood movies in 1962 and has since then won many awards for his performances.

Charlize Theron is an actress who was born on August 7, 1975. She was a model and she started acting in films in 1993. She is also the first African to have won an Academy award in 2003.

Kevin Pietersen was born on June 27, 1980 and started playing cricket for Natal's B team at the age of 17. But due to the racial quota system in South African cricket, he moved to England because his mother was English. He started playing one day internationals in 2004 and there has been no looking back for his since then. Today, Pietersen is considered to be one of best English cricketers.
