Decoding the Meaning of "Odyssey Dawn"

When operation "Odyssey Dawn" started on the 20th March, 2011, the controversy around this new conflict, includes the mission's oddly sounding name. What does "Odyssey Dawn," really mean?

Odyssey has several meanings depending on your views and beliefs, which range from the fact it could be an extended adventurous voyage or trip, to an intellectual or spritual quest. However there is a much deeper Mediterranean feel to the word "odyssey."

In ancient Greece, Homer wrote "The Odyssey," the story of the epic journey of Odysseus, after the fall of Troy, as he tried to find his way back home. This journey was made into a popular movie in the late 1990's. One reason the modern meaning of "Odyssey Dawn," means an extended journey of adventure, and self discovery.

However there is a darker side to the meaning of odyssey, believers of the occult including the masons, view Homers story as a spiritual text. Leading to a new wave of conspiracy theorists claiming that this military mission, is using the guise of protecting civilians for a more sinister plan.

"Dawn" also has many meanings, it simply means in modern terms the beginning of the day (daybreak), but is also used to express the beginning of something. Dawn also is a female name, but in ancient history- more than simply a name.

The Dawn Goddess was one of the more important Greek Goddesses, and was referred to as the shining one. The tale of how the Dawn Goddess was abducted by a dragon, and was saved from imprisonment by a heroic god, was celebrated by early Indo-Europeans.

Romans believed Aurora (Dawn) flew across the heavens in the morning, announcing the coming of the Sun. Coincidentally Homer also wrote about Aurora, who was reputed to have as one of her lovers, none other than a Prince of Troy.

We could surmise that "Odyssey Dawn,"- means the rescue of something through an epic journey, but what is that something? Otherwise it could only be a random choice of names, as claimed by the military commanders of this campaign.

Perhaps, the final result of this strangely named, and confusing military mission could reveal the true meaning of "Odyssey Dawn," and whether it is simply a start of a journey of adventure to save something precious, a mission to protect protesters against a vicious dictator or something known only to those who planned this mission.
