South African Holidays

In this article we will go through what South Africa has to offer to ensure that you make the most of your trip. This includes famous wildlife tours, historic and natural scenery tours.

The most popular African safari is the National Kruger Park. Located just north east of Johannesburg and it covers 18,989 square kilometres. Here, you can be sure to see a whole range of wildlife including all of the 'big five' - lions, rhinos, buffalo, elephants and leopards plus other species that are not found in many other safari game reserves such as cheetahs, hunting dogs, impalas, springbok plus some of the world's biggest crocodiles.

National Kruger Park has lodges and hotels catering for all standards so you are able to stay within the park as well. This allows you to get the full experience of a safari by seeing the animals throughout the entire day.

If you are unable to get up to Kruger Park then there are plenty of private game reserves scattered across the country, including Aquila Game Reserve. This reserve is about an hour or so out of Capetown and you can also stay in beautiful lodges here if you plan on staying a few days or a tour guide will pick you up from your hotel in Capetown for the day tour. Here you get to see all the main safari animals you would expect to find however the biggest difference here was that the lions are kept separate to the herbivores. This is to sustain the few numbers of species within the park.

Capetown itself is a large city that is surrounded by a huge mountain range and in the middle of this is Table Mountain. The top of this mountain is completely and unusually flat. You can take a cable car up to the 3,500 ft high mountain which I highly recommend. Up here you will get great panoramic and breathtaking views of the entire city of Capetown.

Also in Capetown, if you are interested in history of the apartheid and Nelson Mandela then you can take a cruise out to the island where Mandela spent most of his adult life in. The once jail, now museum, sits on Robben Island and a day tour here will take you into the cells and maximum security areas of the prison. You will also get to speak with the guards and other inmates that actually spent time or knew Mandela personally.

South of Capetown is a small town of Gaansbai... famous for its great white sharks that lurk below the waters visiting frequently. A small cage will fit up to 4 people and below the surface you watch the sharks attack and stalk the bait. In these waters I myself got into the cage with four different sharks ranging in size from 2.5 metres right up to a 4 metre great white which looked more like a deadly submarine. This is an experience that you will not forget.

Everyone's South African Holidays will be different but no matter what the reason you decide to visit this beautiful country I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. Famous for its wildlife tours such as National Kruger Park to shark diving and the historic Mandela tours and the beautifully natural setting of Table Mountain.

Africa itself has many other safari's and tours to offer so read more on South African Holidays or other African safari's then please visit Nothing But Adventure.
